Aveda saves water in their signature earth-loving style as part of their worldwide initiative Aveda’s Global Earth Month Campaign to raise funds and awareness for environmental projects around the world. Now in its 14th year, the April-long campaign inspires Aveda’s network of beauty professionals and consumers in more than 30 countries to raise $5 million for the protection of clean water – something that nearly 780 million people worldwide fight for daily. More than 4,100 children in developing nations die each day from preventable conditions directly linked to consumption of unsafe drinking water.
The Aveda brand is, of course, known as a product line made with pure flower and plant essences and for the great lengths they go to respect the earth. Since 1999, the Aveda network has raised more than $26 million to help support organizations that directly affect environmental change; since 2007, $20 million of this amount has been designated for water-related causes. Last year the Aveda Canada network of salons, spas, and stores raised a record amount of $529,000, and over $1.2 million dollars since 2006, dramatically improving the lives of approximately 50,000 people in Africa. Aveda Canada has set a fundraising goal of $590,000 this year.
Aveda Canada will generate funds by a variety of initiatives throughout the month. A favourite hair salon of Toronto young professionals, Civello will participate in a global 24-hour cut-a-thon on Earth Day, April 22. Aveda stylists in salons worldwide – from Tokyo, to Sydney, Moscow, London, New York and Toronto – will volunteer their time to offer haircuts in return for a donation to Earth Month. The aim is to set a Guinness World Record for most money raised for a charity by haircuts in a 24-hour period. The famed Ray Civello, Aveda Canada President, CEO and international hairstylist, will pick up the scissors himself to perform haircuts at this event. Canadian charity WaterCan will receive 100 per cent of the proceeds. Check out the participating salons from across the country here.
Another well-orchestrated initiative, Aveda Walk for Water unites Aveda’s network and guests in a series of walks around the world during the week of April 22, 2013. These walks extend an average of six kilometers, symbolic of the average distance women in developing countries walk each day to collect water for their families. We have said it before: Aveda’s signature candles are beloved household staples with their instantly comforting spa-like aromas. Sold exclusively during Earth Month, Aveda’s 2013 Light the Way soy wax candle features a new Madagascar-inspired aroma blended with 100 per cent certified organic essential oils of vanilla, cinnamon and ylang-ylang, all sourced from Madagascar. Available at Aveda retail locations, 100 per cent of the purchase price ($13) will be donated to Global Greengrants Fund.
The actions of Aveda undoubtedly have a huge impact, but conserving the world’s water supply starts one person at a time. We stopped by Civello’s Queen West location (where the always reliable Ashleigh Stapleton is our go-to for highlights) last week for a waterless hair styling session with Aveda Canada Creative Director Kristjan Hayden, who showed us how to go from flat and greasy to volumous and gorgeous – all without water.
The secret to revitalize flat hair on non-wash days is to add volume by one of three quick fixes, explains Hayden.
1. Dig out your old crimping iron and crimp the roots of your hair under the part for extra texture and fullness.
2. Use Velcro rollers with an air supply hairspray, and heat and set with a blow dryer
3. Use Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep in the roots for texture, then blow dry and re-style.
If your greasy hair is beyond repair, you could always try the wet look, where you wet your hair with product and slick back, as was seen at this season’s Jason Wu, Christopher Raeburn, Giambattista Balli, and Haider Ackerman runway shows.
The key is to second or third day hair is to embrace the natural texture that develops after not washing. “Upstyles always work best in hair that is not freshly washed,” says Hayden. “Always bring day two hair for upstyles as it holds, stays up and pins better.” He tells us that simple, easy-to-do hairstyles are hot this season and can be done with Aveda products and without water.
Low maintenance (but still hot) second day hair up-do options include things like sleek and sophisticated but incredibly simple low buns (seen at Erdem, Givenchy, Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Valentino, Versace shows) and sleek ponytails secured at the nape (seen at Alexander Wang, Chloe, Dior, Etro).For a half-up hairdo that isn’t too prom-y or bridesmaid-y, add volume to the roots, centre part and braid each side, then pin back. Even the tucked-in ponytail, or loop ponytail (the go-to of females worldwide for not-so-fresh hair) can be made more public-appropriate by wrapping a large section of your hair around it, creating a messy bun. Of course, braids are always a safe option for less-than-fresh locks.
Those living in developing nations typically have access to fewer than 30 litres of water each day.. In contrast, the average Canadian uses (an unfortunately not so surprising) 329 litres of water each day. Do you really need to wash your hair every day? Thanks to Aveda, we think not.
