Hot Property: Calgary

Amongst young professionals, tastemakers, and arts minded pioneers, Calgary’s East Village is probably one of the most buzzed about neighbourhoods in the city right now. Once virtually cut off from the rest of the city, East Village is now linked to everywhere you need to be, quickly becoming the most anticipated community…and it’s pretty clear as to why.

Still in ‘early’ stages, East Village is blooming into a diverse and dense neighbourhood where walkability and livability are a given; connections to nature and other city neighbourhoods are effortless; and shopping, dining and entertainment are varied and memorable.

The progress of the East Village has been rapid. Since 2007 about $150 million in infrastructure improvements have been implemented. This includes Phases 1 + 11  of RiverWalk, a 4km pedestrian and bike path on the banks of the Bow River, construction  of the 4th Street underpass, road works and utility upgrades throughout the 49-acre urban village, land assembly and the construction of a new visitor and sales centre called East Village Experience Centre. But perhaps one of the most culturally interesting initiatives is the Seafood Market Artists Studios. In 2010 the 24,000 sq.ft. space opened with 14 studios, giving the arts community a temporary base in East Village. Within the Market, 51 artists are busy writing, filming, painting, potting and performing the place to life.

The East Village master plan and Area Redevelopment Plan consider public art a key element of great public spaces, placemaking and community building. For this reason, international-class artistry is being woven into the fabric of East Village through several initiatives. There are permanent installations being erected; curated spaces that will feature regularly changing exhibitions and installations; and strong relationships with Calgary’s art and cultural authorities.

Interested in calling the East Village home? Recently the VIP sneak peak opening of the East Village Sales and Experience Centre attracted nearly one thousand Calgarians.
Ambassadors, aka resident experts, were on site to answer questions and tour visitors through the sales suites for Evolution and FIRST, the premier residential condominium offerings in East Village. With the opening of the East Village Sales and Experience Centre, sales are beginning on the first two major mixed-use residential projects of some 600 new riverview condominium homes.

East Village is a bold, unprecedented experiment in the future of city life – a dense, masterplanned, 24/7 urban laboratory for livability, walkability and possibility.

See you on the 24th for the kick-off event!
