Well, this may help your New Year’s resolution cause.

You’ll soon see a wearable app store from Fitbit – a favourite workout accessory for many pavement-pounding young professionals.

According to CEO James Park, Fitbit’s upcoming app store will use some of the assets the company acquired from Pebble when it purchased the startup last month for a cool $40 million.

In its five-year lifespan, Pebble accumulated around 14,000 third-party apps in its store, and built a solid platform for Fitbit to take over.

Some of the benefits of the move to an app store include the strengthening of relationships with employers and health care companies who are using Fitbits for corporate wellness programs – an increasingly common perk of progressive workplaces.

“There are so many different applications [our partners] want to write from fitness-related ones to pill reminder applications. And we don’t have the support in place for that right now, or any software infrastructure on our devices to run those apps,” said Park according The Verge.

The announcement supports the rumours that Fitbit will launch its own smartwatch.

In addition to the app store, Fitbit has also announced new features to render the platform more personal and inspirational to its users. This includes things like a new Personal Goal Setting option, where users can take a survey to receive a more tailored activity goal.

Come March, Fitbit will also launch a new (overdue, in our opinion) Community tab that functions like a social media platform.

Here, Fitbit enthusiasts can share their progress with other users via photos and blog posts.

So, when can we expect the app store to go live? According to The Verge, Park said it would happen “as soon as possible.”
