If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past few days (or in a cupboard under the stairs) then you know that J.K. Rowling’s newest book in the Harry Potter series, The Cursed Child, has just been released.

Fans have been eagerly waiting since July of 2007 for a new Harry Potter book to grace the shelves of bookstores everywhere. In light of all this Pottermania, I used my own magical powers to sort Toronto neighbourhoods into their respective houses.

King West – SLYTHERIN
No, this doesn’t mean everyone who lives on King West is inherently evil and will attempt to open the Chamber of Secrets. Slytherins aren’t necessarily immoral; they are those with great ambition. Over the last few years, King West has become the stomping ground of everyone’s favourite group – young urban professionals. These are people who have self-reliance, determination, and are always realistic about their goals. After all, green is the colour of success.

Queen West/OssingtonRAVENCLAW
That introspective philosopher hipster you met at The Cameron House last week? He’s a total Ravenclaw. Living in one of the hippest neighbourhoods in the world, Queen West-ers are definitely those of wit and learning. Intelligent creative types are practically overflowing as soon as you step onto this strip.

LeslievilleMAIN

Leslieville – HUFFLEPUFF
Leslieville: where people are just and loyal. This place is crawling with boutiques, bakeries, cafes and people looking to settle down and start a family. They’ve fled away from the party lifestyle but are still sticking to their trendy hipster roots. These are good-hearted, dependable people that just want to go about their days and live relatively drama-free lives.

Kensington Market – GRYFFINDOR
Those who populate this area of the 6ix are truly the brave at heart, not because they live here, but because they are all unafraid to be their eclectic selves. Kensington residents tend to be a little quirky and probably rent a trendy entirely-thrifted apartment, but their sense of humour is out of this world. That super romantic manic pixie dream girl that you met at that house concert in a loft definitely has a trendy place in Kensington. And she’s a total Gryffindor.
