Anyone who tuned into the Super Bowl can agree that – in addition to the amazing comeback from The Patriots – a huge highlight was Lady Gaga’s epic halftime performance.

While countless people took to social media to praise the pop star for her performance – in which she jumped from a stadium roof, performed insane acrobatics and sang live for 13 minutes while fiercely rocking a crop top and booty shorts – others weren’t so nice.

The trolls called her “fat,” and “flabby,” claiming that she had a “muffin top” or “beer gut.” They said she should have spent more time toning, training and crunching for the big day.

Yes, it’s enough to make our blood boil as well, especially since she looked damn strong and fit to us.

It’s pretty sad (and frankly, a little surprising) that this is even happening at a time when body positive campaigns spread like wildfire through the internet and when plus-size models grace the pages of Sports Illustrated.

But, Lady Gaga isn’t losing any sleep over it.

After days of an online war between the trolls and Gaga’s fans, she finally fired back, saying, “I heard my body is a topic of conversation so I wanted to say, I’m proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too,” she wrote. “No matter who you are or what you do. I could give you a million reasons why you don’t need to cater to anyone or anything to succeed. Be you, and be relentlessly you.”

“That’s the stuff of champions. Thank you so much everyone for supporting me. I love you guys,” she added.

While the star has also been criticized for taking a “safe” route during her decidedly less edgy performance than we’re used to seeing from the star, perhaps this sends the most powerful message of any when it comes to her performance.

The star has spent years fighting against bullying and encouraging her fans to love, embrace and accept themselves through her Born This Way Foundation.
