Habits Gastropub has been open about three weeks now, and the word is starting to get around the College and Dovercourt neighbourhood: this place is pretty sweet. One part restaurant, and one part hot spot for drinks – which, might we add, use house-infused vodkas and spirits and mostly run under 10 bucks – Habits Gastropub is a little spot you need to take note of.
It's warm inside, with a distinctly not-Toronto feel. Owners Luis Martins – a Portugal native who's been in Toronto for about eight years now – and Michelle Genttner have created a space that's inviting and decidedly not trendy. The front is bright, with an obscured view of the open kitchen. The back room space has leather loungers and will soon house live music and a fireplace where patrons can cozy up and take in the entertainment.
The main menu is small but well-cultivated by Chef Ron Stratton, and includes modern twists on classic fare, like Vietnamese Spring Rolls and a Deconstructed Caesar Salad. Also on the list is Pulled Pork (very a la mode in Toronto) and the Fish and Chips (the fish is wrapped in prosciutto before it's battered). The menu will see changes based on in-season produce and chef's specials. Late nights on weekends will see a smaller bar menu available from 11pm until late, meaning there's now a perfect spot for those nights when you want a fresh bite at a late hour.
Starting soon, Habits Gastropub will also be doing special events where patrons can get a better glimpse at where their produce is coming from (often direct from the farmers) and pairing nights. The grand opening is slated for early September, but until then you can drop in and test out some notable food with a delicious drink.
Habits Gastropub combines the best of a worthy resto – well-prepared food at affordable prices – and a chill pub – great atmosphere.
