Executive Reads: Brady Dahmer

As Creative Director for his own Vancouver-based strategic design agency, BDD, Brady has an insatiable curiosity for new ideas and greater brand expressions. He has a strong, passionate conviction to push barriers, explore new ideas and deliver original strategic design because, after all, great brands are passionate brands. In 2008, Brady created the Projecting Change Film Festival, a forum for film and dialogue about social and environmental issues. The marquee six-day event features inspiring, eye-opening, and often award-winning documentaries from around the globe, followed by dynamic speaker and panel discussions.

It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want To Be by Paul Ardin
Part optimist, realist and inspirer, Paul Ardin marries profound messages and quotes with thought provoking photos and symbolism. Whenever I’m having a bad day, am stuck with a problem or just need to feel inspired, I take a flip through his book and there’s always something in it to spark off an idea, vision or smile.

How Customers Think by Gerald Zaltman
I had to read this book for a course, which I was dreading having to crack the cover to find some deep, over-scienced theoretical dissection of  the psychology of our buying habits…I’m an Art Director not a scientist. I was very pleasantly surprised, so much so that I finished the book within a weekend. It's a fascinating book delving into psychology, neuroscience, sociology, and linguistics surrounding our conscience and unconscious buying habits. An easy read as psychology books go.

S+ARCK by Philip Starck
The book is a retrospective of the French design genius. You name it and he’s probably designed it: Juicer, scooter, yacht, hotel, shoes, chairs, etc. There is no limit to the creativity, ingeniousness and wit he breaths into every piece he designs. How can you not love someone who calls themselves a “tireless and rebellious citizen of the world who considers it his duty to share his ethical and subversive vision of a fairer world”?

Since Brady is a Film Festival Curator, he's also provided his favourite documentaries that have affected his life, passions and perspective:

The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara
The film focuses on the interviews of former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. He provides a retrospective look back at his past decisions and the lasting impact they have had both positively and negatively.

A beautifully scripted and scored film by Philip Glass, it has deeply profound messages that easily transcend time and place into our everyday work and home lives. One of the movies I watch at least once a year.

Sketches of Frank Gehry
Directed by Sydney Pollack, this film is an inquiry into the inspiration, life and work of architect Frank Gehry. It’s an unconstructive view of his creativity and ingenuity, unfolded from scribbles on a napkin to seeing the final unveiling some of the world's most awe-inspiring structures.

Life in a day
Life in a Day is a breathtaking crowdsourced documentary film created by over 80,000 clips by thousands of people from over 192 nations, showing very personal respective occurrences from around the world on a single day. It acts like a time capsule to show what it was like to be alive on the 24th of July, 2010. An absolutely fascinating and intriguing view of the unedited lives of others as they get up and go through their daily routine, to the final moments where they lay their head on their pillows to start it all over again. It will put so many of your daily trials and tribulations into perspective.
