Starbucks has unveiled their very first seasonal decorative cups releasing March 16th for a limited time only. Clearly, there is somebody smart working in marketing at Starbucks.

Marketers know that social media is the most valuable, as far as brand awareness and reach goes, and so Starbucks needed something new to inject into Instagram. After the warm fuzzy feelings that come with Starbucks’ holiday red cups has waned, so too have their presence from Instagram — springtime is the next best thing.

The pretty takeout cups at @OrettaToronto, the blue-and-white teacups at Portland Variety and the multi-coloured cups at Nutbar perform well on Instagram, and they’re often captured by influencers — but those brands are very different from Starbucks.

Nutbar performs well. Starbucks wants to, which is why they made these cups. But Starbucks is a huge, multi-national organization and Nutbar is a single-location shop in Toronto. Which one do influencers think is cooler? Most likely the latter. Penetrating the coffee sub-culture is Starbucks’ goal, but influencers may not care to take their phones out for their next tall blonde.

The smartest person at Starbucks would have @songofstyle on speed dial to set fire to the trend. Without a key influencer, it’s suspect to say that the colours will fly.
