Krystin Lee is the face behind the wildly popular Toronto-based lifestyle blog, Suburban Faux-Pas. Not only has her side-hustle gained her an extremely engaged following of over 180k but her classic style has helped her become a paid influencer for lifestyle brands too. Lee’s secret? Creating IRL connections.

Do you know where you got your drive from?

I think my ambition is a result of both of my parents. My father was an entrepreneur who was always dabbling in various projects and opportunities. Working alongside him at a young age really taught me the value of always being willing to try new things and seek out new adventures for your own well-being and to an asset to future projects. Words can’t describe the skill set I acquired from my Mom. Whether it was learning the art of creating, building and sustaining relationships to effectively managing multiple projects on the go, all while keeping your cool, I feel like she taught me so many valuable lessons that no schooling, job or book will ever teach you.

What would you say is your preferred way to network?

My preferred way to network always has been, and always will be, in person. I love a great relationship that’s been fostered on social media but getting to meet face to face and truly know someone is invaluable to better understanding them.

How would you describe your process for deepening relationships?

I think placing value on face to face interactions is key. There’s something to be said for a conversation having in person versus Skype or a conference call. I also think getting to know your contacts better and learning about their personal life, what their personal interests are or what motivates them not only helps you adapt to their needs but also fosters a connection you’ll always be able to rely on.

What is your favourite way to market your product or services?

It would have to be Instagram. I love how visually appealing the platform is and getting to share your personal aesthetic with the world through a lens is just such a great means of communicating with your audience.

How and where do you continue to learn?

I’ve been trying to get better at attending social media conferences and workshops that relate to the industry. Whether it’s attending local events such as Blog Podium or this year’s Social Media Summit in Chicago, every little bit helps. Our office also puts forth a great effort in terms of information sharing and we’re always encouraging the sharing of white papers or interesting articles that are relevant to the digital and social world.

How do you feed your soul?

Travel! I’m always planning my next destination. The mix of food, culture, history and languages is always what I need to hit the refresh button and come back with aa new perspective on things.

What type of content do you find most compelling on Instagram?

As of late, I find captions to be the most captivating part of the channel. As engagement becomes increasingly important, I’m always interested to see what topics and concepts shape people’s use of their feed.

What lifestyle brand would you say shares your values most?

I adore all things J. Crew. I know they’re traditionally seen as a fashion brand but I think they’ve evolved into a lifestyle brand and I feel like their upbeat attitude and fresh take on things is just so intoxicating.
